Frequently asked questions

What is Bumelerze?
Bumelerze (bûmelerze, Kurdish for “earthquake”) is an earthquake monitoring app for the Kurdistan Region: a live earthquake feed from three scientific sources, one-tap “did you feel it?” reports, our own scientist-reviewed SHAKEmaps, a live phone-sensor view, and plain-language safety guides — in Sorani Kurdish, Kurmanji Kurdish, Arabic, and English.
How do felt reports work?
After an earthquake, tap “I felt it!” and pick the picture that best matches what you experienced — one tap, done. You can optionally add more detail: where you were, what moved or was damaged, a comment, a photo. If you have no connection, the report is saved on your phone and sent when you're back online. Aggregated reports help build shaking maps of how each earthquake actually felt across Kurdistan.
Do I need an account?
No. Bumelerze has no accounts and no sign-up, and never asks for your name, email, or phone number.
How do I delete my data?
Today, all your data is stored on your device only, so deleting the app deletes everything. Once Bumelerze's report database is live, you can also email us your in-app device ID and we will delete the reports associated with it. Details: see the privacy policy.
Why does the app ask for my location?
Only to show the distance from you to each earthquake and to attach a position to felt reports you choose to send. It is used only while the app is open, and it is optional — you can pick your town manually instead.
